Horat-vano · The Palkar Matrimony story

The care behindnew beginnings.

Before a family’s first conversation, there are years of quieter work. This is the story of a community service, and the care that keeps remaking it.

Before the rebuilds

First, someonehad to begin.

Ragu Tirukonda gave the community a place to find one another. In the early service, families entered through a shared community password. It was a first doorway into something people needed: a way to begin looking for a life partner.

That first effort matters. It brought people together before the polished screens and the personal accounts. Every version that followed could build on a beginning someone had cared enough to make.

A service, growing with its people

Year after year.A little more care.

A second photograph. A place to keep notes. More say over what you share. The experience grew through years of changes, shaped around the real decisions families make. Follow the story, one year at a time.

  1. Before 2013Ragu’s original service

    The story had already begun.

Matrimony was already part of palkar.org before the 2013 rebuild. Ragu Tirukonda had created a place for Sourashtrian families to find one another, with a shared community password as the entrance. His original service made the first connections possible. The years that followed continued that effort.

    • Ragu’s first contribution
    • A shared community entrance
    • The foundation for what followed
  2. 2013A fresh beginning

A place for the details that matter.

The existing service entered a new chapter in 2013. Families could build a fuller profile: age, height, education, family details, photographs and a horoscope. Search helped narrow the choices, personal passwords gave families access to their own details, and profile approval added another layer of care.

    • Fuller family profiles
    • Photos & horoscopes
    • Profile approval
  3. 2014Help when it was needed

A forgotten password could be a small setback.

Password recovery gave families a way back into their account. Birth time and birthplace added detail for horoscope discussions. Photos and horoscope indicators became easier to spot while browsing, and volunteers gained more ways to help review profiles. The work was as much about everyday usefulness as adding something new.

    • Password recovery
    • Birth time & birthplace
    • Volunteer review
  4. 2015Closer to everyday life

Better on a phone. More room for different journeys.

Browsing and quick search were refined for smaller screens, with attention to phone layouts and photographs. Search also made room for divorced and widowed members. Behind the scenes, better tools helped volunteers find duplicate entries and keep abusive profiles out of the listings.

    • Phone-friendly browsing
    • Remarriage search
    • Duplicate-profile checks
  5. 2016Listening and responding

    Feedback could become a conversation.

The team gained a way to reply to suggestions by email, making it easier to follow up when someone needed help. Profile-photo guidance and notices were made clearer, and the home page showed more profiles. Small changes like these made the service easier to understand and look after.

    • Replies to suggestions
    • Clearer photo guidance
    • More profiles to browse
  6. 2017A fuller first impression

    One photograph became two.

A second profile photograph gave families another glimpse of the person behind the details. Phone browsing gained small preview pictures, earnings information became part of the profile, and terms and privacy information were added. The experience was becoming fuller in both what it showed and what it explained.

    • A second photograph
    • Phone photo previews
    • Terms & privacy information
  7. 2018More confidence in contact details

Checking the number behind a profile.

Phone verification brought a one-time code into the process. The prompts and resend timing were refined too, helping families understand what to do next. Profile cards offered another way to browse, while US/Canada-related details and search choices gave overseas families more relevant information.

    • Phone verification
    • Profile-card browsing
    • US/Canada search details
  8. 2019Finding your way more easily

A clearer way to browse and introduce yourself.

Profile creation, editing and browsing received a broad refresh. Families could move between list and card views, work through clearer registration steps and search with more than one choice for details such as hometown, rasi and nakshatram. Verification and account-access checks continued to receive attention alongside the new look.

    • Clearer registration
    • List & card views
    • More flexible search
  9. 2020Remembering and reaching out

Free at its heart. More ways to connect.

Shortlists helped families return to profiles they wanted to consider. Notes gave them a place to remember the details of their search, and in-app chat opened another way to take a conversation forward. The service also gained an Android app, while email verification and more detailed viewing information continued to develop.

Optional Premium membership was introduced in 2020. Palkar Matrimony remained free to use, as it is today. Families who chose Premium gained additional benefits while helping sustain further development. It gave members another way to support a service that continued to serve the wider community.

    • Shortlists & notes
    • In-app conversations
    • An Android app
    • Optional Premium membership
  10. 2021Your space, your choices

More control over how you take part.

Members gained ways to hide a profile, report a concern and block another profile. Returning to a search became easier as the service remembered previously used filters. Subscription renewal and clearer membership dates received attention too. The search was becoming easier to resume, and personal boundaries had more support.

    • Hide, report & block
    • Remembered search filters
    • Membership renewal
  11. 2022Making a search more useful

See who has been active recently.

New filters helped families find profiles active within the past week or month. The support team gained ways to help with photo and horoscope uploads. Shortlists, membership periods and renewal details were refined further: practical work that helped families keep their search moving.

    • Recently active profiles
    • Help with uploads
    • Clearer membership periods
  12. 2023The North American chapter

A dedicated edition for families across the ocean.

A separate North American version became part of the story, with a journey for families living in the United States and Canada. Work covered local phone verification, city details, membership options and the profiles and conversations those families would see. It was a significant step towards serving a community living in different places.

The experience continued to be adjusted through the year, including how families moved between the North American offering and the wider service. Search also gained more precise exclusions, and longer conversation lists became easier to browse.

    • United States & Canada
    • Local contact & city details
    • Dedicated membership options
  13. 2024More say over what you share

Contact details could have clearer boundaries.

Eligible memberships gained contact-visibility options, and salary visibility became another choice. More work went into blocked-profile lists, conversations after unblocking and clearer notices. Membership upgrades also took account of the time remaining on an existing plan. Privacy choices and the everyday details of membership both received care.

    • Contact visibility choices
    • Salary visibility options
    • Membership upgrade credit
  14. 2025Making the next step clearer

A warmer welcome. A more explained match.

A new visual direction reshaped registration, profile cards, filters and the experience on smaller screens. Horoscope comparisons gained explanations in English and Tamil, followed by downloadable reports. Work also strengthened sign-in requirements around photographs and horoscope documents. The changes reached both how the service looked and how families used it.

    • Refreshed screens
    • Bilingual match explanations
    • Downloadable match reports
  15. 2026and beyondCare that continues

Still getting better, for your next beginning.

English and Tamil became more deeply part of the experience. Shortlists gained stages for contact, horoscope discussions and family meetings. Matching expanded into fuller reports from birth details, with a guide explaining the calculations. Conversations, account deletion and profile pauses received further attention, alongside continued work on the phone experience.

The next chapter is still being written. Through every year, the purpose carries on: make the search clearer, respect the people taking part, and help families begin a conversation that could change their lives.

    • English & Tamil throughout
    • Shortlist stages
    • Fuller horoscope reports
    • More member controls

This account follows dated records of work on the service. The years show when improvements were being made; individual changes could reach families later. The earliest chapter also draws on the maintainer’s recollections. The founding of palkar.org in 1998 is a separate part of the story.
